How to Deal
with Cyberbullying

6 proven steps from the eSafety Commissioner. You are not powerless.

FROM THE EXPERTS

Why these steps actually work

The eSafety Commissioner created these steps because they stop the bullying fast, protect your mental health, and give you back control β€” all while keeping evidence for serious cases.

6 POWERFUL STEPS FROM THE E-SAFETY COMMISIONER

Take back control β€” step by step

01
Stay calm & don’t respond
😌
Avoid replying β€” even with anger. It gives the bully what they want.
Take a break from the screen. Go for a walk, breathe, talk to someone offline.
Use mute, hide, or ignore tools inside the app.
REMEMBER: Their words say more about them than about you.
02
Tell someone you trust
πŸ—£οΈ
Talk to a parent, teacher, older sibling, school counsellor, or family member.
They can help you decide next steps and support you emotionally.
You don’t have to handle this alone β€” support makes everything easier.
03
Collect evidence
πŸ“Έ
Take screenshots of EVERYTHING β€” messages, posts, usernames, dates, times.
Save links and record how long it’s been happening.
Store it somewhere safe (Google Drive, photos app, or USB).
This evidence is gold if you need to report it later.
04
Report it
🚨
First: Report inside the app/platform (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, etc.).
In Australia: Report serious cases to the eSafety Commissioner at esafety.gov.au
They can force platforms to remove content β€” even from overseas.
05
Block & protect yourself
🚫
Block the person on every platform immediately after reporting.
Turn on privacy settings: private account, limit DMs, hide stories.
Don’t accept new friend requests from strangers right now.
06
Look after yourself
❀️
Do things that make you feel good β€” sport, music, friends, hobbies.
Talk to a counsellor if you’re feeling anxious, sad or unsafe.
Remember: This is not your fault. You are strong and you will get through this.
